Geography and Boundaries of Azhiyur
Azhiyur is a coastal village panchayat. It is bounded by Mahe and the Mahe River (which belong to the Union Territory of Puducherry) to the north, Onchiyam and Eramala Grama Panchayats to the south, the Arabian Sea and Mahe Municipality to the west, and the Mahe River along with Eramala Grama Panchayat to the east.
🌊 Coastline and Protection
This panchayat has an approximate coastline of five kilometers. The coastal regions from Kappuzha northwards up to Poozhithala are vulnerable to sea erosion. However, in the southern region of Kappuzha, rock formations running parallel to the sea reduce the impact of waves during the monsoon season. This favorable geographical condition facilitated the establishment of a fishing harbor here. The hills located in the southern part of Azhiyur—Karappakunnu, Bungalakunnu, and Pathirakunnu—together with Kalarikunnu in Eramala Panchayat and Kaithol Kunnu in Onchiyam Panchayat, form a natural protective shield. As a result, the southern regions of Azhiyur receive a degree of protection from natural disasters such as tsunamis.
